Nama Ramayanam - Part 3

Updated: Mar 11

Summary of Aranya Kandam ॥ अरण्यकाण्डम् ॥

Life in the Forest Hermitages

Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana travel through the Dandaka forest, visiting hermitages of sages. The sages complain that rakshasas are disturbing their sacrifices. Rama promises to protect them and destroys many demons troubling the ascetics.

The Encounter with Surpanakha

The rakshasi Surpanakha sees Rama and becomes infatuated with him. When Rama playfully redirects her toward Lakshmana, she grows angry and attacks Sita out of jealousy. Lakshmana cuts off her nose and ears.

Khara and Dushana Are Defeated

Humiliated, Surpanakha complains to her brothers Khara and Dushana. They attack Rama with a large army of rakshasas. Rama single-handedly destroys them and their forces.

Ravana’s Plot

Surpanakha then goes to Ravana and describes Sita’s beauty. Filled with desire and anger, Ravana plans to abduct Sita. He seeks the help of the demon Maricha.

The Golden Deer

Maricha appears near the hermitage as a magical golden deer. Sita is enchanted by it and asks Rama to capture it. Rama goes after the deer and finally kills it. As he dies, Maricha calls out in Rama’s voice for help.

Lakshmana Leaves the Hermitage

Hearing the cry, Sita becomes anxious and urges Lakshmana to go help Rama. Though Lakshmana knows Rama cannot be harmed, he finally leaves to reassure her.

The Abduction of Sita

At that moment Ravana arrives disguised as a mendicant. When Sita steps out to offer alms, he reveals his true form and abducts her in his flying chariot.

Jatayu’s Attempt to Rescue Sita

The noble vulture Jatayu tries to stop Ravana. A fierce battle takes place in the sky, but Ravana mortally wounds Jatayu and carries Sita away to Lanka.

Rama’s Grief and the Meeting with Kabandha

Rama and Lakshmana return and discover Sita missing. They search the forest in deep anguish. They find the dying Jatayu, who tells them Ravana has taken Sita. Later they encounter and kill the demon Kabandha, who advises them to seek the help of Sugriva.

Ending of Aranya Kandam

The canto ends with Rama and Lakshmana moving southward toward the region where they will soon meet Sugriva, setting the stage for the events of Kishkindha Kandam.
